What happens when you take a singer/musician that has a killer body and beautiful face and make her into a porn star? You get Brea Bennett. A self-described musician turned porn star, this blonde bombshell from Arizona is no longer under contract with Jenna Jameson's studio, Club Jenna. Now a free agent and available to work for anyone, Brea Bennett is approaching her porn career with a new found optimism. In this interview with XRentDVD’s Big D, Brea Bennett discusses her departure from Club Jenna, what it was like to be the focus of her first interactive sex DVD and how a non-sex injury will prevent her from working for a while.
Big D: I keep hearing a rumor that you are no longer on contract with Club Jenna anymore. What's the scoop?
Brea Bennett: That's correct. I am actually non-exclusive with Club Jenna anymore. I don't know if I want to get into the details about it but I guess we are moving in different directions. I want to go in one direction with my career and they want to go in another. We left on good terms which is always good.
Big D: Since you want to take your career in a different direction than they had envisioned, what direction is that?
Brea Bennett: I just want to have more control over my own career. I started in this business by making my own decisions and not getting caught up in all of the chaos and the politics that are involved with being in this industry. I wanted to continue going on in that way. I don't know what is next for me. I just know that I am excited. I have a bunch of things starting up. I am going in studio and I'll be making my second record. Actually I need to lay low for a while because I ripped some ligaments in my ankle. (laughs)
Big D: How did that happen?
Brea Bennett: I fell off my bed. (laughs)
Big D: Was this an occupational hazard that happened while filming or you injured yourself away from having sex on camera?
Brea Bennett: No, completely happened on my own. It was like 1:30 in the morning and I was making my bed. I went to step down, slipped and I cracked my ankle four times. I was supposed to leave for San Diego 10 minutes later. I was debating with myself, hospital or San Diego? Hospital? San Diego? Obviously I did not go to the hospital and I ended up going to San Diego. A month later I said, 'maybe I should go to the doctor for this'. That way I found out I ripped four ligaments in my ankle.
Big D: Obviously with your time off and you are now free to work for anyone in porn, do you have a wish list of directors or companies that you want to work for once you are released by the doctors to work again?
Brea Bennett: When I was with Club Jenna I wasn't looking around and hoping to work for someone else. When I make a commitment, whatever it is, I am not one to dabble in something else. As far as what is happening now, I am just excited to see all the doors opening for me. I do have a bigger name now and what I have created and what Club Jenna has helped create is kind of exciting for me. I am excited to see what's next.
Big D: You only did girl/girl scenes prior to your contract with Club Jenna. After you came on contract you started doing guys. Now that you are a free agent can we expect to see you add some more things to your 'yes' list that you will be doing on camera?
Brea Bennett: I have always been the type of person that believes if you are not comfortable doing something or if you feel like you are doing well with what you are already doing, then you don't need to change those things. Doing boy/girl was huge for me because it wasn't something I wasn't going to do unless I was under contract. As far as expanding my 'yes' list further, it really depends on the situation what the company brings to the table. As far as I know I am still continuing to grow into my own sexuality and discover what I really am sexually. I really don't want to jump in head first.
Big D: Was doing boy/girl part of getting the Club Jenna contract or was it just a good time in your career to expand and start doing guys on camera?
Brea Bennett: I think it was both. It was also a requirement to do guys in the contract. You give a little to get a little. When I won Jenna's American Sex Star, Jenna Jameson told me that the contract would require me to do guys. I told her that was fine and I started doing guys. Now I am ready for that next step in my career, whatever that may be. Right now it seems like it will be music and porn. Those are the things I am best at.
Big D: You are an avid singer and musician. Has being in porn slowed you down in your pursuit of music and being able to perform as often as you like? Now that you don't have the demands of a porn contract will you pursue that music career more?
Brea Bennett: When I was in my contract I did it completely as my No. 1 focus. You could say that now that I am free agent I can basically be my own boss and determine when it is time for me to start doing more of the things that I feel will help benefit me and my career. When I was in my contract, of course, my contract duties and obligations came first.
Big D: If you had to describe yourself, would you say you are a porn star that performs music or are you a musician that also does porn?
Brea Bennett: I would probably say I am a musician first. I have been a singer ever since I was three years old. I have been writing music since I was seven years old. I did my first record when I was 12. Music is my first love.
Big D: You've said that going on Jenna's American Sex Star was extremely nerve wracking. What was better, getting brought back by Jenna herself after getting voted off or winning the whole thing?
Brea Bennett: Wining the whole thing altogether was a great stepping stone in my career. If I was to be brought back on the show and I still didn't win I would have gotten some publicity. But to have my year and a half with Club Jenna was a great stepping stone for me.
Big D: You are getting ready to release My Plaything: Brea Bennett with Digital Sin. This is your first interactive adult DVD. How was it different than shooting a regular adult DVD before, during and after your contract with Club Jenna?
Brea Bennett: It was a lot of fun. I was happy to do this because it shows another side of who I really am. The setting in the DVD is a racing theme. It is a NASCAR theme. All my fans know I am obsessed with NASCAR. I think it is a little more different in that I have more say in what I wanted to do. It showed more of me sexually because it was interactive. I am speaking to the person on the other side of the screen like they are really there with me. I think it is really important for me to be able to really connect with my fans that way instead of just doing a normal scene.
Big D: Being a Club Jenna girl right out of the gate, what was that like to have so much publicity from the start without doing a whole lot of work in adult films?
Brea Bennett: To be honest with you, I was kind of oblivious to it all. I am not one to float my boat and to say stuff like, 'I'm the shit' or 'look at me, I'm the next big thing'. I am not one to blow my own horn. That's my job and that what I work for. I am here to please my fans. The more fans I please, the word gets out and I will get more and more fans. I thought it was a good thing. I wasn't really nerve wracking. It just showed that my hard work was now paying off.
Big D: What kind of fan input have you received when it comes to this next step in your career outside of your contract with Club Jenna?
Brea Bennett: To be honest with you, you are the first person I have told that I am now non-exclusive with Club Jenna. My fans don't quite know yet. My hardcore fans were kind of surprised when I signed with Club Jenna that I would be doing guys. They were my fans to start with because I did girls so well. I think my fans will stick with me no matter what I do. When I do my cam shows and I do my blogs and I do my diary online I am so personable and I am such a normal person. I think it is really appealing to my fans that they feel like I really do live next door to them and that I am really a normal person. Changes are inevitable in any career.
Big D: Why were you and the folks at Club Jenna at different ends on your career direction that you believed you needed a change and to get out of your contract with them? What ideas did you have that differed from their way of thinking?
Brea Bennett: They weren't holding me back but going out on my own was a good way to start my career. I am still so young in this industry and I am still trying to get a grip on how things work within this industry. I think this change was happening at the time it was supposed to happen and me being non-exclusive is happening at a perfect time.
Big D: Once you started doing guys and your career was expanded by your affiliation with Club Jenna, what were some of the bigger surprises?
Brea Bennett: I am not sure there were any surprises. Nothing really happened that I didn't already expect to happen. Everything was pretty normal as far as scenes and movies went. It was just a regular job that you go to. You punch the time clock and when you are done you go back to your hotel room or your home and that is that. I really didn't have that many surprises really.
Big D: Seeing how you live in the Phoenix, Ariz. area, how do you think that is going to affect your ability to work now that you are out on your own. Being on contract you probably already knew how many movies you will be doing and can schedule them while you are in California. Being a free agent that doesn't live in the Valley, do you think booking jobs will be harder since you do not live where all the movies are made?
Brea Bennett: I don't think it will be difficult just because I am pretty determined when it comes to work, no matter what type of work it is. People do know what my work ethic is and how I am while I am on set and how I am off the set. I am the same person I am whether I am on set or off of it. I travel to California quite often so traveling to work will not be a problem.
Big D: What keeps you living in Arizona instead of moving to California to be closer to work?
Brea Bennett: Right now I am saving my 'millions' (laughs) to move to the beach. That is my ultimate goal. I do have plans to live by the beach. I wouldn't live in California unless it was by the beach. It's just too crowded and by the time I get home with all of the traffic I could have already flown there from Arizona. The only thing that would make sense to move to California would be to live by the ocean.
Big D: Do you have projects already lined up now that you are a free agent?
Brea Bennett: You know, it has only been about a week or two since I became non-exclusive with Club Jenna. I just got back from a small vacation so I really haven't sat down and started my business plan. I don't think it will be that difficult and I think it will be a good ride. I am really excited for the next few years of being in the industry and what it has to offer. I'll see what other people want to see from me and if other companies are interested in me. I may just love being a free agent and go back to what I started with in the beginning.
Big D: First job?
Brea Bennett: I was a beauty consultant at a cosmetics store
Brea Bennett: Mudvayne, Slipknot, The Used, Kill switch. I am a bit of a metal head.
Big D: Favorite food?
Brea Bennett: Eastern Indian food
Big D: First porn you ever watched?
Brea Bennett: My friends made me watch my own. I had never seen porn in my life. That's why I seem to be so naïve about the whole industry because I just don't watch porn. The movie they made me watch was Brea's Crowning Glory.
Big D: Favorite position?
Brea Bennett: Doggy
Big D: Go to the movies or go to the ballgame?
Brea Bennett: The game. I like hockey and NASCAR. Football is cool but baseball is kind of boring to me.
Big D: What modern convenience can you not live without?
Brea Bennett: Probably my laptop.
Big D: Favorite mainstream movie?
Brea Bennett: I like the Bourne Identity movies
Big D: Favorite vacation spot?
Brea Bennett: Encinitas, Calif. or the Caribbean.
Big D: Person you'd like to meet that you have not met?
